  • PHOENIX — Nine Phoenix wrestlers advanced to next week's regional tournament, including three district champions, in the Skyline Conference district meet Saturday at Phoenix High.
Taking conference gold for the Pirates were 138-pounder Braden Vega, 145-pounder Eleazar De Luca and heavyweight Steven Sharbono.
Henley earned the Skyline team title with 399.5 points, while Klamath Union finished second (234.5) and Phoenix took third (211.5). KU's Dave Coker was voted Skyline coach of the year, with Henley's Zorg Loustalet (lower weights) and Seth Sotelo of Hidden Valley (upper weights) named the Skyline's wrestlers of the year.
Vega, a sophomore, entered the tournament as the sixth seed but won all four of his matches, including a 7-4 decision over Henley's Calvin Tillery in the championship bout.
"(Vega) really put forth a great effort the whole tournament," Phoenix wrestling coach John Farmer said.
De Luca, a two-time defending state champion, captured his third district title in dominant fashion, earning a 13-3 major decision over Carlos Hernandez of Henley in the finals.
Sharbono, who's been wrestling for only two years, edged Josh Cox of Mazama 2-1 after Cox was penalized one point for stalling.
"I thought everybody wrestled really well so as a team I was really proud of them," Farmer said.
Wrestlers must finish in the top four at regionals — to be held at Hidden Valley on Saturday — to qualify for state.
TEAM SCORES — Henley 399.5, Klamath Union 234.5, Phoenix 211.5, Mazama 193, Hidden Valley 149, North Valley 90.
