GRESHAM — Senior Aaron Ghiglieri and sophomore Breanna Sapienza of Cascade Christian each won a pair of titles at the OSAA Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state swim meet Saturday and continued their progression to bigger events this summer.
Ghiglieri won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 butterfly, while Sapienza won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly with each narrowly missing all-time meet records.
"We had a pretty good meet overall," Challengers coach Leslie Ghiglieri said. "We met or were close to meeting our goals. We have some pretty high standards for some of the goals, but we were close to them. I think we're all happy."
In other Class 4A highlights, defending champion Phoenix finished sixth in the girls meet. Cottage Grove won the boys title, while Henley won the girls crown, the school's first after eight second-place finishes.
Cascade Christian, which missed qualifying its boys 200 medley relay team for the finals by less than two seconds Friday, featured two of the top swimmers of the day regardless of classification.
Aaron Ghiglieri won the 100 butterfly in 49.52 seconds, just off the all-class record of 48.72, established by Neil O'Halloran of Aloha in the Class 6A meet last year. Ghiglieri's time set a 4A/3A/2A/1A meet record.
Sapienza won the 100 butterfly in 54.63, just .11 off the all-time record set by Roseburg's Kaylin Bing in 2008. Her time also established a Class 4A/3A/2A/1A record.
Both near-record times met the All-American standard.
Aaron Ghiglieri met the All-America time in the 200 IM at 1:51.15, which was well off the all-time OSAA meet mark of 1:49.50, set by Ben Brink of Sheldon in 1999.
"I've been near the butterfly record and really wanted to get that," he said. "The next step for me is to get the Olympic Trials time. I still need to get that."
With the Olympic events measured in meters, Ghiglieri needs to cut .28 from his current top time in 100 fly to meet the Olympic Trials standard of 55.29. The next major meet is in Federal Way, Wash., March 8.
Sapienza's performance in the butterfly was not only impressive because of its time, but also its spot in the meet line-up: directly after her win in the 50 freestyle.
"I might have had a little more energy if the events weren't back-to-back, but that's how I've been swimming all season so it's not a big deal," she said. "I'm just (.11) off the record. I'll aim for that next year."
Sapienza already has her 100 butterfly Olympic Trials time, 1:01.90, which is .09 under the standard.
Phoenix sophomore Alyse Darnall finished second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:18.05. Sweet Home's Naomi Gunselman triumphed in 2:17.02. Darnall was also fifth in the 200 freestyle to lead the Pirates' youth movement.
Sophomore Olivia Sanchez finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke, and the 400 freestyle relay team, which featured four sophomores, finished third.
Jeoff Underwood placed second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.34. The race was won by Matthew Cook of La Grande in 51.68. Underwood also was fourth in the 100 butterfly and helped the 200 freestyle relay team finish sixth to highlight the boys' results for Phoenix, which finished 11th overall.
