Defense sends Challengers to 3A semis

March 02, 2012

COOS BAY — The Cascade Christian girls basketball team has frustrated its opponents all season with its defense. As of late, the Challengers have turned more and more to a full-court press that has disrupted the opposition.

Third-seeded Salem Academy was the latest victim of the Challengers' stifling press on Thursday at North Bend High School in the Class 3A state tournament.

The seventh-seeded Challengers shocked the Crusaders 60-45 in the quarterfinal round and will face defending state champion Vale in the semifinals today at 6:30 p.m. at Marshfield High School.

"The big thing was defensively we really got after it," said Cascade Christian coach Marvin Denman. "Salem Academy, they're a very good shooting team but we kept the pressure on them and we just didn't allow them to really get going."

Jordan Martinez paced the Challengers (19-9) with 17 points, nailing four 3-pointers while Katie Aguilar added 15 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals.

The Challengers outrebounded Salem Academy 55-40 thanks to Meghan Higday's 16-rebound effort. Kelsey Cochran provided eight points, four rebounds, seven assists and a pair of steals for Cascade Christian.

Ellie Gould led the Crusaders with 17 points, 12 rebounds and four steals with Meadow McAllister adding 15 points.
