  • CORVALLIS — North Valley's fourth-quarter comeback came up short in the fourth-place game at the Class 4A boys state tournament Saturday at Gill Coliseum.
    The Knights trailed by as many as 12 points in the final period but forced Newport to hold on for a 68-66 victory.
    North Valley (26-4), the Skyline Conference champion, got off to a good start against the Cubs. The Knights held a 16-9 lead with just under two minutes left in the first quarter, then the Oregon West Conference runner-up scored the final eight points of the period and never trailed again.
    North Valley fell behind 61-49 with 51/2-minutes remaining in the game. The Knights cut the margin to 67-63 on Dylan Vandehey's layup with 37 seconds to go. North Valley forced a turnover on the Cubs next possession but Jake Herklotz's shot near the basket was blocked by 6-foot-6 post Stuart Bartoldus. Yadie Dunmore grabbed the rebound and was fouled but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. The Cubs sophomore guard was fouled getting the offensive rebound on his miss and made one free throw for a five-point lead.
    North Valley's Kevin Brazille connected on a late 3-pointer for the final margin of victory.
    Brazille paced North Valley with 15 points and Cameron Lyon came off the bench for 12 points. Herklotz contributed 11 points and 15 rebounds.
    Yadie Dunmore led all scorers with 24 points and Bartoldus added 21 points and 14 rebounds.
