• Challengers prevail at Crusader Relays

  • ASHLAND — Cascade Christian's girls track and field team offered up a solid showing to edge St. Mary's and the North Valley boys were dominant during the Crusader Relays on Monday at Southern Oregon University.
    The Challenger girls were especially solid in the field events, winning the shot put (Jo-Anne Jessee), discus (Michelle Kinney), javelin (Cheyenne Auchard) and long jump (Mackenzie Kelton). Cascade Christian also won the 4x200 relay, one of a three uncommon relay events added for the special meet, with the quartet of Megan Killiam, Alex Torano, Brittany Brown and Mallory Mann.
    Sarah Bennion cruised the intermediate hurdles in 49.80 seconds to win for St. Mary's, which also got an individual win in the high jump from Alexi Provost-Shean at 4 feet, 10 inches.
    On the boys side, North Valley finished first in eight of the 14 events, with Cody Toller winning the shot put and discus events.
    Cascade Christian's foursome of Aric Alcantara, Andrew Hubbard, Brandon Williams and Tristan Akery combined to win the sprint medley relay, a highlight of the meet that features a pair of runners doing a 100-meter dash, another running a 200 and a fourth running a 400.

    BUTTE FALLS 13, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 5 — Mariah Moore posted 14 strikeouts against only two walks and was 3-for-5 with two runs and four RBIs to lead Butte Falls to the nonconference win in the season opener for both teams at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
    Joli Hobbs was 3-for-5 with one run for the Loggers, who opened a 6-2 lead through three innings.
    McKenna Britton smacked a two-run single in the sixth inning for Cascade Christian, which also received a triple by Sawyer Benzley.

    MARSHFIELD INVITATIONAL — At Bandon, the North Medford girls placed second out of five teams and the Crater boys landed 12th out of 14 teams at the Bandon Trails Course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
    Caiti Barrie posted a nine-hole round of 57 to lead the Black Tornado girls, who were runner-up to Roseburg.
    Fallon Wallace paced the fourth-place Crater girls with a 57.
    On the boys side, Crater's Corey Marineau carded a 94 to pace his team. Southridge's Nigel Lett was medalist with a 75 but his team finished second to Canby.

    Kenny Pederson grabbed the lone singles victory for North (1-0) in a tough match of No. 2 seeds against Zach Williams, winning 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.

    GRANTS PASS 5, NORTH MEDFORD 3 — At Grants Pass, in a contest of top seeds, Grants Pass' Domi Tortiger bested North Medford's Cali Hale in a tight battle as the Cavers earned the dual victory.
    Hale won the opening set 6-3, but Tortiger rallied with 6-2 and 6-4 winners. North's Hannah Von Strahl coasted by Megan Ward in No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
    In doubles, Melissa Rose and Julia Ribeiro of the Black Tornado (1-0) got past Olivia Newey and Rachael Derkey with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph.
