South sweeps at three-way meet

EAGLE POINT — South Medford's boys and girls swept dual-meet victories over Eagle Point and Cascade Christian in a three-way track and field meet Thursday.

The Panther boys were paced by sprinter Mason Pugsley, who captured the 200 meters (23.30) and the 400 (51.0) and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay team.

Cascade Christian's Levi Girardot posted fine early-season marks in winning the long jump (20-11/2) and triple jump (42-2), while Eagle Point's Tyrone Holmes, the defending state champion in the shot put, garnered that event (51-0) and the discus (126-1).

Double winners in the girls meet were South Medford's Carmen Mejia in the 200 (28.70) and 400 (1:01.20), Cascade Christian's Grace Bevan in the 100 hurdles (17.90) and the 300 hurdles (53.10) and the Challengers' Jo-Anne Jessee in the shot put (38-2) and the javelin (117-5).

Boys Tennis

SOUTH MEDFORD 4, NORTH MEDFORD 4 — South Medford won at No. 1 singles and doubles, but North Medford captured three of four doubles matches to forge the tie at South Medford High.

Matt Pronesti of South defeated Reid Shipley in No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and the Panthers' Marius Strack and Jack Delaney won by the same score over Ryan Trapp and Bentley Coulman at No. 1 doubles.

Ryan Hogan had a strong match at No. 4 doubles for North (1-1-1), as did the doubles teams of Elijah Von Strahl and Troy Behnke, and Kyle Campbell and Landon Sherbourne.

NORTH MEDFORD WINS — At Eagle Point, North Medford's Joey Walker shot 79 to lead the Black Tornado to victory in the Eagle Point Invitational at Eagle Point Golf Club.

St. Mary's Dylan Wu and Rogue River's Kevin Murphy shared medalist honors with even-par 72s.

Eagle Point's Hunter DeLange was the only other player in the 70s, carding a 78.

Also for Phoenix (3-0), Hailey Wyncoop was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, Makayla Scoggins 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Delanie Tally 3-for-6 with a triple and an RBI.

NORTH VALLEY 7, NORTH BEND 0 — At Merlin, Jake Herklotz struck out seven batters in four innings and North Valley took advantage of wildness by the North Bend pitchers in the nonconference win.

Herklotz allowed two hits, and was relieved by Stephen Parker, who allowed one hit and fanned three in three innings.

March Garmendia was 2-for-4 for the Knights (4-0).
