Medford police identified a man shot in the torso in west Medford Thursday night as Derek Scheller, 22, of Grants Pass. He was listed in serious condition late Friday at Rogue Valley Medical Center but was expected to survive, police said.
Their continued investigation Friday turned up few details of the shooting, reported at about 8 p.m. Thursday along West Main Street.
"We still do not have a confirmed location," said Lt. Mike Budreau. "We do not have a motive. We do not have a suspect."
Police said a woman had called dispatch to say she was transporting a man to the hospital who had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.
Police searched several storefronts near the West Main Street Dairy Queen, but were unable to confirm the shooting's specific location. It's not known whether the shooting was gang-related.
"We don't have a whole lot of information, unfortunately," Budreau said. "We believe that there are more witnesses out there that aren't coming forward. We were hoping to be further along in our investigation."
Court records show a warrant was issued for Scheller's arrest on Monday for failing to appear in court on a methamphetamine possession charge from March. It is not known whether the shooting was drug-related.
The incident remains under investigation by Medford police. Anyone with additional information should contact the Medford Police Criminal Investigations Division at 541-774-2230.
