Picking tree-ripe fruit is within easy reach at a family-run farm in Talent.
Sugar Plum Acres, at 1850 Pioneer Road, grows superior cherries and peaches at some of the area's lowest U-pick prices, which explains why the farm was picked by readers for the second consecutive time. Thrifty families, particularly those who can fruit and preserves, know to arrive early, as fruit can all be claimed by noon.
Cherries kick off U-picking in June. Most of the orchard's trees are dark-red Stella with three other varieties, including yellow Rainier, mixed in.
Peach season starts in August with Red Havens and runs through September. Sugar Plum keeps prices around 50 cents per pound for peaches.
The former dairy farm dating to 1924 entered the U-pick business with strawberries and tomatoes in 1982. Ten years later, Robert Hunter planted peach and cherry trees, which produce the property's main crop, although tomatoes and roses were available for U-pickers in recent summers.
