Known foremost for bargain-priced and institutional-sized groceries, Food 4 Less has built up a reputation in natural foods.
The grocer's natural-foods section, Oregon Healthy Living readers' favorite in a mainstream grocery store, has expanded tenfold over the past 15 years. At least a half-dozen new items arrive weekly, says department manager Terry Johnson.
"We try to keep up with what people are asking for," says Johnson.
Gluten-free continues to be among the most frequent requests, she says. Even with more than 2,000 square feet of shelves, bulk bins, refrigerator cases and freezers, it's still a struggle for space in the massive Medford store owned by Sherm's Markets Inc.
"Sherm says we'll just hang 'em from the ceiling," says Johnson.
The most recent changes are natural health and beauty aids moving to the main floor, as well as laundry supplies and packaged broth, says Johnson. Customers who don't find what they need can place special orders.
