Oregon Healthy Living readers can recognize their favorite herbalist, Jon Carlson, in realms outside his Ashland clinical practice. Carlson's Vitalist School of Herbology is training the next generation to emulate their teacher's expertise.
Vitalist's personalized program currently enrolls 14 students. In about a year's time, they can complete all their coursework, including an intensive summer session of fieldwork, which emphasizes gathering native medicinal plants. Carlson also brings herb lore to the general public during city-sponsored workshops throughout the year.
Extracting herbs' healing properties and compounding all his remedies at the school, 340 A St., No. 7, Carlson sees several clients weekly. He works with some well-known local growers to obtain certain certified-organic plants, and he says he emphasizes sustainability in the industry.
Carlson founded Vitalist nine years ago after training at the Southwest School of Botanical Medicine in Bisbee, Ariz., and at the Acupressure Institute in Berkeley, Calif. He also apprenticed for three years in five-element acupuncture.
