The Ashland Family YMCA's 144,000-gallon swimming pool is huge, offers a vast array of classes and workouts — everything from arthritis classes to boot camp — and it still has time for kids and frisky adults to just have fun, says aquatics director Melissa Maddox.
"People like it because it has the best guards and swimming instructors, and we make sure the water stays balanced all day," notes Maddox. All pools are required to have enough chlorine to control bacteria, but the Ashland Y's is salt water — and salt HCl, is half chlorine.
The pool is 25 yards long, with lanes for long workouts, and has a 20-by-25-foot alcove for children to do what children do, which is mainly play (and learn to swim along with it).
The Y's list of classes is long. Arthritis swim is also good for people in post-surgery recovery or who have fibromyalgia, and it's low-impact but increases range of motion, she says. The "boot-camp swim" is "very high-energy, goes good with strength training and can be in deep or shallow water," she notes.
