After Rogue River pitcher Lacey Swangle baffled Cascade Christian in their Southern Cascade Hybrid opener on Friday, the Challengers found a way to get past their offensive woes and salvage a victory in the nightcap.
Swangle tossed a two-hitter to start the Chieftains out with a 7-2 victory but the Challengers got to the Rogue River ace in Game 2 for a 11-7 win at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
Swangle went seven innings in Game 1, giving up a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth and struck out nine.
She was helped in the second inning by a two-run single from Hope Wolterman which bolstered the Chieftain lead to 3-0.
The Challengers (4-11, 2-1 SCH), however, ripped off 15 hits in Game 2 while overcoming six errors.
Swangle was charged the loss working the first inning and then innings four through seven.
Up 6-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Meghan Higday delivered for the Challengers, knocking home two runs on a double with the bases loaded. The Challengers finished with four runs in the frame to go up 10-2.
The Challengers' Jordan Martinez went 3-for-4, drove in three runs and scored once as Haley Casebier went 3-for-4 as well with a pair of runs and a RBI.
Higday finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Cassie Zimmerer was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 11-12, ROGUE RIVER 1-2 — Cascade Christian freshman Cody Coggins supplied some timely hitting as the Challengers won a pair of five-inning Southern Cascade Hybrid games at U.S. Cellular Park.
The Challengers won the opener 11-1 and came back with a 12-2 triumph in the nightcap.
Coggins collected two hits and two RBIs in Game 1 and junior Daniel Scottow went 2-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.
Challenger pitchers Isaiah Luzny (4-1) and Luke Dusenbury combined for four strikeouts and two walks.
In Game 2, Coggins got the Challengers (11-5, 3-0 SCH) off to a fast start with an RBI triple in the first inning.
Jake Miller and Kyle Ferguson each had a pair of hits for Cascade. Miller scored three runs and Ferguson knocked in two.
Challenger pitcher Justin Cheney went four innings to register his second win in three decisions.
Brian Stinchcomb doubled and walked for Rogue River (2-6, 0-2) and scored both Chieftain runs.

ASHLAND TAKES PAIR — Ashland opened Midwestern League play with a pair of 8-0 victories against Marshfield and North Eugene at Coos Bay and Eugene, respectively.
Ashland sophomores Grant Kahn and Michael Montes were impressive in the top two singles slots. Kahn dropped just one game in four sets.
Carl Gorbett exhibited some impressive play for the Grizzlies (6-2, 2-0 MWL) in No. 1 doubles with partner Jack Thomas.
Ashland has a pair of league road matches today against Churchill and Willamette.

The Greenberg-O'Brien combination edged Hermiston's Sara Hawman and Emily Stocker, 6-4, 7-5.

KLAMATH BASIN INVITATIONAL — At Klamath Falls, Roseburg dominated the team event and Cascade Christian's Monique Kaldunski was the top local finisher at the Running Y Ranch Resort.
Kaldunski finished third individually with an 84. Henley's Kaitlin Collom was the medalist with a 72, nine strokes ahead of runner-up Clare Dittemore of Roseburg.
The Indians finished first with a 354 total, while Ashland was third (456) out of the four scoring teams. Redmond was second (385) and St. Mary's placed fourth (532).
