Student honor

Hailey Ordal, an eighth-grader from St. Mary's School in Medford, placed third at the 2012 Oregon State-level Geographic Bee held March 30 at Western Oregon University. This is Ordal's second year to attend the Bee. Last year, she was the only girl to place in the top 10.

Ordal was awarded $50 and National Geographic magazines that date back to 1988.

Up to 100 fourth- to eighth-grade students in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Atlantic and Pacific territories, and Department of Defense Dependents Schools took part in the March 30 state-level Bees.

The state winner, Pragyna Naik, will represent Oregon in the national finals at the National Geographic Society headquarters, May 22-24. The National Geographic Bee is organized by the National Geographic Society.
