EAGLE POINT — The outcome was closer but the end result remained the same for Ashland in Class 5A Southern Oregon Hybrid softball against Eagle Point on Monday.
Eagle Point earned a three-game series sweep over the Grizzlies with an 8-5 home victory to improve to 8-10 overall.
The Eagles had outscored Ashland (4-16, 0-3 5A SOH) 23-0 in the two prior conference matchups but trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth on Monday. Two runs in the fifth and sixth proved to be the difference for EP.
"It was kind of a bummer loss but aren't they all," said Ashland head coach Cheri Kuykendall. "There's some good progress happening. We're getting a little bit better here and there but still not putting too many Ws on the board just yet."
Nicole Lehman paced Ashland with a 2-for-4 effort that included two runs scored. Her single to lead off the third inning sparked a three-run frame that included RBI singles by Hannah Thornton, Kim Corey and Amber Sutherland.
The Grizzlies tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth after Piper Cantrell doubled and Lehman followed with a single. Both players scored, one on a wild pitch and another on a fielder's choice groundout.
Ashland pitcher Georgia Williams walked 10 and hit two batters but also struck out 10, including seven looking at the third strike. She allowed six hits and stranded nine EP runners.
Brianna Shopp was 2-for-4 with one run and two RBIs and Karly Tolen 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI to lead the Eagles. Pitcher McKinzee Parker allowed six hits, struck out two and walked one.
