  • The Medford City Council voted unanimously to make Eli Matthews its newest member at its regular meeting Thursday.
Matthews was appointed to represent Ward 2.
Former Ward 2 Councilman Jim Kuntz left the post April 5 because of health issues. Kuntz has cerebral ataxia, which affects his speech and motor skills and has necessitated a move across town to a house without stairs.
The 29-year-old Matthews is chairman of the Medford Arts Commission and is on the Citizens Planning Advisory Committee. He volunteers with other organizations, including Eastwood Church, the Medford Mission, Rogue Valley Habitat for Humanity, and the Jackson County Republican Party. He grew up in the Rogue Valley and said he wants to bring the perspective and needs of a new generation to the council.
A citizens' committee interviewed four candidates who sought to fill Kuntz' seat and unanimously recommended Matthews.
Matthews will be sworn into office at the noon City Council meeting on May 17 and has said he will run for election in the fall.
