GRANTS PASS — Ryan Melnychuk is playing his best golf at the right time.
The North Valley senior was medalist at the two-day Skyline Conference boys golf district tournament that wrapped up Tuesday at the Grants Pass Golf Club and led the Knights to the team title.
Melnychuk, the conference player of the year, followed up his low round (69) of the season Monday at Shield Crest in Klamath Falls with the best round (76) Tuesday at Grants Pass GC. Melnychuk carded a 36-hole total of 145.
Phoenix's Travis Campoy was runner-up with a 160 total. Campoy recorded a 79 at Grants Pass GC.
Campoy garnered one of three individual spots to the Class 4A state tournament Monday and Tuesday at Quail Valley GC in Banks. Hidden Valley's Austin Johnson and Tanner Hanks were the other two individuals.
North Valley, the conference regular season and district tournament champion, gained one of two conference team slots at state. The Knights had a 669 two-day total. Klamath Union also advances to state with a second-place 731 at district.
Hidden Valley finished third with a 740, Phoenix was fourth (782) and Henley was fifth (798).

SWC DISTRICT — At Roseburg, Christina Phelps of South Medford shot a 79 in the second round to finish with a 167 total at Roseburg Country Club and earn one of the individual spots for the Class 6A state tournament.
Phelps finished second overall to Sheldon's Haleigh Krause, who won with a two-day total of 156.
Sheldon earned the conference championship with a five-round season total of 1,549 and will be joined by runner-up Roseburg (1,643) at the state tourney. Individual qualifiers also included Morgan Mahaffie of Grants Pass (178) and Lindsey Wong of South Eugene (190).

DISTRICT 6 TOURNEY — At Klamath Falls, North Valley edged St. Mary's for a state berth and five individuals qualified for the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A championships on the final day of the District 6 tournament at Reames Country Club.
The Knights finished with a two-day total of 969, besting the Crusaders by 10 strokes.
Henley freshman Kaitlin Collom shot a 2-under-par 70 to win medalist honors and clinch a spot at state. She'll be joined by sister Kylie Collom (77), Mazama's Hannah Reynolds (82), Cascade Christian's Monique Kaldunski (88) and St. Mary's Jordan Rothfus (95).
The state competition takes place at Eagle Crest Ridge Course May 14-15.

DISTRICT 3 CHAMPIONSHIPS — At North Bend, Wil Cochrane of Phoenix successfully defended his singles title and Cascade Christian's Taylor Pena garnered her fourth straight trip to the state tournament in doubles at the Boys & Girls Club.
Cochrane, who lost in last year's 4A state finals, defeated Keaton Baker of North Bend, 6-0, 6-3, in the title match.
Pena and Eric Morse also repeated as doubles champions. The Challenger pair posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over North Bend's Nathan Petrie and Kevin Johnson.
Pena and Morse finished third at state in 2011. Pena advanced to state twice with Jeffrey Morse prior to playing with the younger Morse the past two seasons.
North Bend won the team championship with 25 points. St. Mary's scored 22 points for second place.
St. Mary's senior Cody Phillips captured third in singles to snag a state tournament spot. Phillips defeated Paul Fullhart of Sisters, 6-1, 6-4, for third place.
Avery Kerwin of St. Mary's won the consolation singles crown with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Tyler Scott of Henley.
The Cascade Christian doubles team of Dane Scott and Kathryn Tooms downed Steven Chan and Josh Dediego of North Bend, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5, in the consolation doubles finals.
