BANKS — Defending state champion St. Mary's won't have as much work to do to repeat in the Class 3A/2A/1A boys golf state championships.
Last year the Crusaders trailed by two strokes after the opening day. But on Monday, Dylan Wu shot an even-par 72 to tie for first and St. Mary's charged out to a comfortable lead on a windy day at Quail Valley Golf Course.
The Crusaders placed three players in the top 12 and posted a team total of 320 — 17 strokes ahead of second-place Catlin Gabel heading into today's final round.
"Having the lead is nice to have," said assistant coach Gene Allred, "but in golf that can evaporate as a team. We still have some work in front of us. We want to go out tomorrow and win the day."
St. Mary's head coach Ryan Allred, Gene's son, wasn't present because his wife is expecting their third child.
Wu, who placed fifth as a freshman last year, carded a 1-over-par 37 on the first nine and went 1 under on the back side. He had four birdies and four bogeys in the round. Wu is tied with junior Montana Frame of Reedsport.
"Dylan didn't have his best stuff," said the elder Allred. "He's a fighter and still came in with a respectable score. He said he drove it straight but his wedge play wasn't his best. His goal is definitely to win state. He's taking it very seriously."
Will Street posted the Crusaders' second best score and is tied for seventh overall. The St. Mary's junior shot even par on the front but went 8 over after the turn for an 80.
"(Street) was playing really well but he had trouble on the greens on the back side," said Allred.
Rogue River junior Kevin Murphy is in third place with a 75 and the Chieftains stand in fifth place (375) as a team. Murphy tied for second in 2011.
