  • BUTTE FALLS — Butte Falls had its softball season come to an abrupt end Thursday after suffering a 3-2 home loss to Prospect in a District 4 playoff.
The Loggers had previously beaten the Cougars three times this season — the most recent a 13-0, five-inning win on Tuesday — but Butte Falls' second-place finish and 8-4 record in District 4 play will only go down as a footnote to the 2012 campaign.
"We didn't have it all together and let one get away, unfortunately," said Butte Falls head coach Roni Burg. "The more often you play someone, it's a numbers game, and they're bound to get you in one. Unfortunately it was the one that counted for us. We kinda got lost in the percentages today."
Class 2A Gold Beach (14-4) played an independent schedule and earned the top playoff berth out of District 4 by virtue of their superior Class 2A/1A power ranking. Lost River nabbed the No. 2 spot on its league-best 10-2 record against the four other squads.
That left Butte Falls (9-8) to play Prospect (9-11), which finished in a three-way tie for third at 4-8 in District 4, in order to settle the league's third and final playoff berth.
The Loggers took a 2-0 lead through three innings on a pair of RBI efforts by senior Mariah Moore — each scoring Joli Hobbs, who went 3-for-3 — but the Cougars roared back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Prospect scored the go-ahead run in the seventh inning when sophomore Danica Coble managed a leadoff single against Moore, advanced to third base on a pair of groundouts and ultimately scored on a passed ball.
Cougars sophomore pitcher Alee Pinkerton sat the Loggers down in order in the seventh to seal the playoff-clinching victory and snap a five-game losing streak.
Prospect plays its first playoff game Wednesday against an opponent to be determined.
    Prospect 000 110 1 — 3 5 1
    Butte Falls 101 000 0 — 2 4 1
    Pinkerton and Coble; Moore and Hobbs. W — Pinkerton. L — Moore (9-7). 2B — P: Pinkerton; BF: Hobbs.
