Lou and Evelyn Benjamin of Central Point celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Feb. 24, 2012, with an extended trip along the Oregon Coast.

Louis Benjamin married Evelyn Reed Feb. 24, 1962, in Los Angeles. They have two children: Cathleen Benjamin of Medford and Kenneth Benjamin of Denver; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Lou graduated from Ventura High School and attended Ventura College. Evelyn graduated from Morningside High School in Inglewood, Calif. They met at the California Tip Toppers club in 1961 and were married at the Los Angeles City Hall the following year. They moved to Ojai, Calif., and both worked for natural-gas companies in Ventura, Lou with Southern Counties Gas Co. and Evelyn with Pacific Lighting Corp.

In September 1963, they moved to Medford for Lou to take a position with California Pacific Utilities Company, which was in the process of bringing natural gas to Southern Oregon. That same year, they built their first home on Pioneer Road in the Griffin Creek area and resided there for 33 years until they moved to Central Point.

Lou became a registered professional engineer in the field of corrosion control. He retired from Avista as the manager of technical services for Oregon operations in July 1996.

They attended First Baptist Church in Medford and worked with high-school youths for several years. Since their move to Central Point, they attend the Community Bible Church.

Evelyn enjoyed bowling and was president of the Medford Women's Bowling Association for four years. They enjoy traveling and camping with their children and grandchildren. They were members of the Star Promenaders and Lords and Ladies square-dance clubs. They became board members of the Oregon Square Dance Federation and participated in putting on a national square-dance convention in Portland.

They enjoyed winter vacations for several years in Arizona. As time permits, the couple still enjoy traveling.
