Oregon State Police troopers are continuing an investigation into a traffic crash on Highway 199 south of Grants Pass Saturday that killed a 61-year-old Gold Hill woman and injured her boyfriend, who was driving.
OSP Sgt. Jeff Allison said Clell Edler, 52, of Gold Hill, was driving north on Highway 199 near milepost 16 in his 2006 Chevrolet pickup at about 9:40 p.m. Saturday when he swerved to avoid a deer in the road. Edler lost control and the pickup traveled off the highway and struck a large tree.
Edler's girlfriend, Peggy Jean Kidd, was pronounced dead at the scene. The couple were returning from a day of fishing along the coast, according to OSP.
Edler was transported by ambulance to Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass with nonlife-threatening injuries, OSP said. Both Edler and Kidd were using safety restraints and the pickup's airbags had deployed, police said.
OSP troopers from the Grants Pass and Central Point offices are continuing the investigation. Trooper Zac McLendon is the lead investigator. Police ask any witnesses or people who stopped at the scene but haven't talked with investigators to call OSP Southern Command Center dispatch at 541-474-3174.
OSP was assisted by the Josephine County Sheriff's Department, Illinois Fire Department, Rural Metro Fire and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
