GRANTS PASS — A Grants Pass teenager died this weekend while swimming in an irrigation canal.
Seventeen-year-old Chase Davidson became trapped and drowned Saturday afternoon after he bypassed a safety grate and tried to swim through the underground channel, according to a news release from the Grants Pass Department of Public Safety.
At approximately 3 p.m. Saturday, officers and firefighters responded to a report of a trapped juvenile near Harpazo and Hamilton lanes in Grants Pass. Underwater cameras were used to locate the teen. He was determined to be deceased, police said.
Water levels were too high to safely remove his body Saturday. Efforts were made to stop the water levels, but that took considerable time, the release said.
Davidson's body was recovered at 9 a.m. Sunday morning and returned to his family. The other juveniles who were with Davidson at the time of the incident were unharmed.
Davidson's death was ruled to be accidental. However, the case still is under investigation.
