  • Cascade Collegiate Conference coaches expect the Southern Oregon men's cross country team to claim its fifth consecutive conference championship in 2012, while the Raider women were picked to finish fourth in the conference preseason rankings released Thursday.
    On the men's side, Southern Oregon earned a perfect 100 points via all 10 first-place votes to secure the top spot. The Raiders enter their second season under head coach Grier Gatlin, who served as interim coach in 2011 and led SOU to its fourth straight conference crown and third place at nationals.
    The women's team got 73 points to rank fourth. College of Idaho was a unanimous top pick with 100 points after winning three of the last four titles and placing ninth at nationals last year.
    Southern Oregon opens the season Sept. 8 at the Humboldt State Invite in Arcata, Calif.
    Tryouts for the Southern Oregon Showcase fall basketball league begin at 3 p.m. on Aug. 26 at Grants Pass Boys and Girls Club. Registration starts at 2:30 p.m. There will also be a parent meeting.
    Games begin at 5 p.m. on Sept. 11 and will continue every Tuesday and Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. through Nov. 1. Those selected will participate in an all-star game on Nov. 6.
    Games will be played at Grants Pass Boys and Girls Club.
    Tryouts are free. The league participant fee is $250. Players must bring a white T-shirt that they can write on or a jersey with a number on it.
