Ashland and Grants Pass band The Illies will present its poetic lyrics and laid-back "heavy-hittin', slow-groovin'" style at 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Alex's Plaza Restaurant, 35 N. Main St., Ashland.

The band — J Masters on rhythm guitar and vocals, Scott Mangico on drums, Rabbit on bass, Nacho on keyboards, Antonio Melendez on saxophone and Fozmo on congas — was formed in 2010 and released its debut album, "Seaweeds," earlier this year.

The Illies, whose name is short for the Illinois River, plays an original blend of reggae, surf rock, jazz, hip-hop and ska.

Cover to the show at Alex's is $5. Call 541-482-8818 or see
