  • Oregon State Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred Friday afternoon on Interstate 5 near Rogue River.
Troopers have not released the name of the 82-year-old man who was killed in the crash or his passenger who was critically injured, OSP said in a news release. The OSP said the names will be released this morning.
The crash happened at 1:35 p.m. near milepost 47. The 82-year-old driver was traveling north in his 2004 Dodge Ram pickup when it collided with the rear of another Dodge pickup driven by Matthew C. Bowden of White City.
After impact, the 82-year-old's pickup swerved to the left and into the center median and then skidded back across both northbound lanes. It then rolled on the east side shoulder before coming to rest on its top in a drainage ditch with water running through it.
Both occupants were extricated by Rogue River Fire and Rescue crews. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His right front passenger, age not available, was transported by helicopter to Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford with critical injuries.
Bowden, and his passenger Nicole Bowden, were not injured.
Everyone involved in the crash was wearing safety belts, OSP said.
The northbound lanes of traffic were closed for a brief time and the extrication occurred. Traffic was then opened to a single lane for two hours during the investigation, OSP said.
OSP troopers from the Grants Pass and Central Point offices are continuing the investigation. Rogue River Fire & Rescue, Mercy Flights and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene.
