ROGUE RIVER — Oregon State Police have released the names of two Cave Junction residents involved in a fatal crash Friday in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 near Rogue River.
Police said 82-year-old Louis V. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene and his passenger, Daniel J. Notter, age not available, was transported by helicopter to Rogue Regional Medical Center in Medford with critical injuries.
The crash happened at 1:35 p.m. near milepost 47. Johnson was traveling north in his 2004 Dodge Ram pickup when it collided with the rear of another Dodge pickup driven by Matthew C. Bowden of White City.
After impact, Johnson's pickup swerved to the left and into the center median and then skidded back across both northbound lanes. It then rolled on the east side shoulder before coming to rest on its top in a drainage ditch with water running through it.
Both occupants were extricated by Rogue River Fire and Rescue crews.
Bowden and his passenger, Nicole Bowden, were not injured. Everyone involved in the crash was wearing safety belts, OSP said.
Police are continuing their investigation into what caused the crash.
