Ten of Jackson County's mayors will host the Saturday, Sept. 22, Mayors United event to feed hungry children and families. Sponsored by Wells Fargo and hosted by ACCESS, Mayors United features food, wine and beer, entertainment, and live and silent auctions from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bigham Knoll in Jacksonville.
Mayors participating include Ashland Mayor John Stromberg, Central Point Mayor Hank Williams, Eagle Point Mayor Bob Russell, Gold Hill Mayor Bucky Steffen, Jacksonville Mayor Paul Becker, Medford Mayor Gary Wheeler, Phoenix Mayor Carlos DeBritto, Rogue River Mayor John Bond, Shady Cove Mayor Ron Holthusen, and Talent Mayor Bill Cecil.
"No one should suffer from hunger, and it's happening all around us," said Wheeler in a news release.
"Mayors United is an easy and fun way we can all help our fellow neighbors who are going hungry. As mayors, we take pride in supporting ACCESS and the food banks within all of our cities."
The ACCESS Food Share Pantry Network operates 24 pantries, with locations in Medford, Ashland, Ruch, Applegate, Prospect, Eagle Point, White City, Rogue River, Gold Hill, Butte Falls and Talent. The number of people seeking food support has increased by more than 7 percent since 2010, with 33 percent of those helped by ACCESS being children.
Last year, ACCESS fed 3,500 families, or 10,000 individuals, each month and distributed more than 44,000 food boxes and 2.9 million pounds of emergency food.
Tickets are $40 per person, $75 per couple or $350 per table, and seating is limited. To purchase tickets, call 541- 774-4312 or buy online at www.accesshelps.org.
