  • Jet Fire Thunder, an event featuring a variety of vehicles and drag racing, is set for Saturday at Champion Raceway.
Fire-breathing jet dragsters, blown alcohol dragsters, nostalgia cars and a jelly-bean themed wheel-standing stage coach will all be on the menu.
The evening of quarter-mile racing will also include the Fall Bracket Shootout. Those contests won't be for points, but will offer money-prize incentives. Top speeds could reach 150 mph in some of the electronics and non-electronics classes, says new Champion Raceway owner Bob Lidell.
    Motorcycles will also race.
Expect speeds to get even faster when the jet dragsters come out.
The Incinerator and The Black Rat — two dragsters who will try to break the track's speed record of over 300 mph — will burn rubber three times during the evening.
"The jet cars are probably what draw more spectators than anything else," Lidell says. "They are like F-16s when they take off."
The stage coach is capable of doing a wheel stand for a quarter mile — and that's not all. Sparks come out of the back, flames fly as a visual effect and candy is thrown.
Gates open at 2 p.m. and racing starts around 4 p.m. Exhibitions begin afterward, with a final jet dragster running expected to mark the grand finale.
The cost is $20 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 and free for children 5 and under free. Receive a $5 discount by picking up a coupon at Bi-Mart or several other local retail outlets, or find it online at championraceway.com. Those who are interested in a $5 discount may also receive it by bringing three nonperishable food items to the gate. The food will be donated to ACCESS.
"We're looking forward to a big show," Lidell says.
Champion Raceway is located at the Jackson County Sports Park.
