Leonardo Alonzo and Christian Siordia each netted a goal for the undefeated North Medford boys soccer team as the Black Tornado topped Grants Pass 2-1 in Southern Oregon Hybrid play on Tuesday.
Jose Mendoza sent a cross into a cluster of players near the Grants Pass goal about 10 minutes into the match. After the goalkeeper bobbled the ball, Alonzo knocked it in from about 5 yards out.
Siordia gave North a 2-0 advantage around the 50th minute, belting in an attempt from the 18-yard line.
The Cavemen (4-2, 0-2 SOH) cashed in on a free kick in the 60th minute, but the Black Tornado (5-0-1, 2-0) was able to fend off any further attacks and preserve the victory.
"Our keeper (Jose Siordia) made a lot of fantastic saves and (stopper Benito Torres) and (sweeper Jose Mendoza) played tough," North Medford head coach Michael Belzberg said. "The boys all worked hard."
ASHLAND 4, ROSEBURG 1 — At Ashland, Diego Harrison scored three goals to lift Ashland to the nonconference win at North Mountain Park.
Harrison sandwiched a penalty kick in the 10th minute and a 30-yard power goal around a score by Zahara Moyers-Cullumbine to give the Grizzlies (2-2) a 3-0 halftime lead.
Harrison then tallied 10 minutes into the second half.
EAGLE POINT 8, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1 — At Eagle Point, Jose Lopez and Kevin VanDyke each scored two second-half goals as the Eagles pulled away for their first victory in nonconference play.
Julio Garcia had given the Eagles (1-4-2) a 2-0 halftime lead with goals in the 24th and 36th minutes.
Gerardo Lopez and Sergio Bencomo also scored in the second half for the Eagles.
Cascade Christian's goal came in the 60th minute from Allan Garcia. He was assisted by Jase Artale. The Challengers are 1-4.
PHOENIX 6, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Klamath Falls, Phoenix Alex Vela scored the first two goals and Jose Mendez had a goal and two assists as Phoenix opened Skyline Conference play.
The Pirates (2-1-1, 1-0 Skyline) played their fourth straight road game. They open at home next Tuesday.
Johnny Esqueda scored in the first half to make it 3-0 at the break. He also had an assist.
Ezequiel Flores and Mateo Estrada had second-half goals, and Jose Alegria had an assist.
HENLEY 6, NORTH VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, Sam Johnson recorded three goals to lead unbeaten Henley in Skyline play.
Isaac Gonzales, Trevor Eichelkraut and James Goheen turned in a goal apiece for the Hornets (5-0, 1-0 Skyline).
CANYONVILLE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 4, ROGUE RIVER 1 — At Canyonville, Terry Schmidt scored Rogue River's lone goal on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute of District 2 play.
Emanuel Stand had two goals and Daniel Soloshenko and Caleb Masasu netted a goal apiece for Canyonville Christian Academy (2-0, 1-0 Dist. 2), which led 2-1 at halftime against Rogue River (3-3, 0-1).
