CENTRAL POINT — Elle Bixler provided a potent attack in the middle for North Medford and Crater struggled a bit with its serve-receive game as the visiting Black Tornado earned a Southern Oregon Hybrid volleyball victory on Tuesday night.
Bixler, a junior middle blocker, led the charge with 16 kills and four blocks as North Medford beat the Comets 25-11, 26-28, 25-16, 25-18.
"Their bread and butter is run through the outside and their middles are a little bit smaller and I felt like we could exploit that if we got the ball to Elle early and often," said Black Tornado head coach Erika Wright. "That certainly worked out for us in the long run."
Freshman outside hitter Emily Carter had 11 kills and senior outside hitter Emily Carlson added eight kills for North, while senior libero Ashley Smith had 21 digs and senior setter Telsche Munson had 36 assists. Junior outside hitter Katy Carter also had a nice all-around night with three kills, five aces and nine digs.
The Comets shook off a first-game loss and built as much as an eight-point lead in the second game before the Tornado (6-4, 2-1 SOH) rallied, then fell short.
"That was great to make a comeback after that first game and take that second game," said Crater head coach Jen Mendenhall. "That was a big step for us."
Sophomore setter Kelsey Strouse finished with 63 assists, while the Comets (4-6, 1-3) got seven kills and two aces from freshman Destiny Fahndrich and five kills from senior right side Melanie Dengler. Senior libero Maddie Layton had 19 digs and junior defensive specialist Kelli Gray added 18 digs for Crater.
ASHLAND 3, SOUTH MEDFORD 0 — Senior outside hitter Shelby Minor had seven kills and sophomore setter Jordan Tilley 21 assists for Ashland, which dominated the nonleague match, 25-22, 25-13, 25-17 at South Medford.
Also for Ashland (4-3), which has won four of its last five matches since an 0-2 start, junior middle Madeline Wallace had five kills and sophomore middle Hope Baldrica four.
After cruising through the first two sets, Ashland found itself in a 13-9 hole in the third following a kill by South Medford's Liz DeVaughn. The Grizzlies won 12 of the next 14 points to pull ahead 21-15.
GRANTS PASS 3, EAGLE POINT 2 — At Grants Pass, Grants Pass' Emily Henderson recorded 16 kills in the Cavers' 25-21, 26-28, 22-25, 25-19, 15-9 nonleague win.
Sadie Zozaya had 11 kills, Rashelle DeBolt nine kills, Tiffany Barrett five aces and 48 assists and Halee Rose 50 digs for Grants Pass (4-7), which scored 10 of the final 12 points. Henderson tallied six of her kills during the Cavers' decisive fifth-game stretch.
Hannah Morris turned in 20 assists and Taylor Bidwell 11 kills for Eagle Point (2-7). Kelly Brawner added 39 digs, Brianna Shopp 27 digs and Kinsey Bradshaw seven blocks.
PHOENIX 3, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Phoenix, Haleigh Wagman had eight kills and Hailey Wyncoop six to lead Phoenix in the 25-16, 25-21, 25-20 Skyline Conference win.
The Pirates (4-1, 2-0 Skyline) also got four service aces from Karlie Richardson and three from Ashlyn Flynn.
HIDDEN VALLEY 3, HENLEY 0 — At Murphy, Cameron Allen turned in 10 kills, 15 digs and three aces for Hidden Valley in Skyline action.
Lacey Maynard had six kills, Chloe Lindgren 11 blocks and Megan Combe 17 digs and three aces for the Mustangs (4-3, 2-0 Sky).
NORTH VALLEY 3, MAZAMA 2 — At Klamath Falls, Kenzie Schmoll had 34 digs and Maesy Hughes and Karley Hook added seven kills apiece in North Valley's 25-20, 28-26, 21-25, 18-25, 15-11 Skyline Conference win.
Lacey Lacosse recorded 19 assists and Madison Stegemiller nine blocks for the Knights (3-5, 1-1 Skyline).
ST. MARY'S 3, LAKEVIEW 0 — Nina Console had 12 kills and only two errors in 31 hitting chances as host St. Mary's won the SCH match, 25-22, 25-22, 25-14.
Dakotah Rothfus served 11 points in a row in the second set, including two aces, for the Crusaders (6-5, 2-0 SCH).
Hayley Tyus recorded 14 assists and seven digs, and Olivia Boucher had a service run of five straight with two aces to go with three blocks and two kills.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ROGUE RIVER 0 — Cascade Christian won its SCH opener against visiting Rogue River, 25-13, 25-20, 25-17.
The Challengers are 8-4, 1-0 in the SCH.
For Rogue River (1-10, 0-2), Courtney Moore had eight kills and Darby Gibson and Ariana Lee had three each.
BONANZA 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Bonanza, Bonanza (8-2) downed Illinois Valley (0-7) 25-8, 25-12, 25-5 in nonleague play.
TRIAD 3, BUTTE FALLS 2 — At Klamath Falls, senior outside hitter Tamika Funk amassed 16 kills, nine digs, two aces, two assists and one block for Butte Falls, but Triad won the MVL thriller, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 21-25, 15-13.
Junior middle Brandi O'Keefe had eight kills and three digs, freshman middle Raleigh Weaver had seven kills and two blocks and senior setter Joli Hobbs notched 26 assists, seven aces, six kills, four digs and two blocks.
The Loggers are 1-6, 2-8 in the MVL.
