Reward offered for fire starter

A $5,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for starting the Slate Creek fire in Josephine County.

The reward was announced Wednesday by the Oregon Department of Forestry and the Oregon Council Against Arson.

The 160-acre fire started around 1:30 p.m. on Labor Day in a densely wooded area southwest of Waters Creek Road in the tiny community of Wonder located about 10 miles southwest of Grants Pass.

The fire started along the Root Springs Access Road, which is off Waters Creek Road about two miles west of Highway 199.

The fire burned on U.S. Bureau of Land Management woodlands and private forestland. The price tag for battling the blaze was $1.5 million.

Anyone who has information about the fire is encouraged to call 800-452-7888. The source of the information will be kept confidential. Several tips already have been received, according to the ODF.
