PHOENIX — Hidden Valley used strong line play and three touchdown passes from Tyler Gulbransen to defeat Phoenix 27-0 in the Skyline Conference opener for both teams Friday at Jack Woodward Stadium.

Gulbransen, a senior quarterback, was 16 of 24 passing for 226 yards. He added 24 yards rushing on six carries.

"(Gulbransen) is a great athlete," said Phoenix coach Toby Walker. "He's the heart and soul of their offense. He throws a good ball and makes good decisions."

Joe Wardle was the Mustangs' top receiver with five catches for 55 yards and one touchdown. Travis Cafferty hauled in four receptions for 63 yards and one TD.

AJ Potts paced Hidden Valley's ground game with 77 yards on 17 attempts

Hidden Valley (4-1, 1-0 Skyline) amassed 345 yards in offense to 113 for Phoenix.

The Pirates (2-2, 0-1) were limited to five first downs and 80 yards rushing.

"They're a physical football team and they shut us down," said Walker. "We gave up some big passing plays at the most inopportune times."

Junior quarterback Andrew Reynoso was the Pirates leading ground gainer with 51 yards on 13 carries. Reynoso was 3 of 8 passing for 33 yards.

NORTH VALLEY 56, MAZAMA 22 — At Merlin, quarterback Tristan Burke threw a career-high six touchdowns as North Valley romped past Mazama.

Burke was 15-for-20 for 345 yards and connected with Kyle Rose for two touchdowns — the first a 77-yard score that tied the game 7-all in the opening quarter.

Rose also hauled in a 40-yard TD in the second quarter when the Knights (4-1, 1-0 Skyline) took control with three touchdowns while the defense limited the Vikings to just 10 passing yards and minus-2 yards rushing.

Rose finished with three catches for 131 yards. Austin Neil rumbled for 113 yards on 16 carries and added a 77-yard touchdown reception on his way to 90 yards receiving. Burke also contributed on the ground with 68 yards, while Curtis Roberts had four receptions for 64 yards.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 36, GOLD BEACH 0 — At Gold Beach, David Sellers scored two first-half touchdowns to help undefeated Cascade Christian to a 20-0 halftime lead against the defending Class 2A state champion.

The Challengers (5-0) came up with four turnovers, including three on Gold Beach's first four possessions.

Sellers finished a 52-yard, four-play drive with a 14-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Daniel Scottow on the Challengers' first possession.

In the second quarter, Sellers stripped fullback JR Keeler and returned the fumble for a 48-yard touchdown.

The Challengers rushed for 280 yards. Brandon Williams paced the attack with 90 yards on six carries and one touchdown. Levi Girardot scored two touchdowns and rushed five times for 57 yards.

Middle linebacker Dane Scott and tackle Daniel Grissom spearheaded a defense that limited Gold Beach to 162 yards in offense.

BONANZA 34, ST. MARY'S 27 — At Bonanza, Glenn Alvarez scored four touchdowns in a losing effort for St. Mary's.

Alvarez carred seven times for 123 yards and Daniel Seus added 105 yards on 12 carries for the Crusaders.

St. Mary's (4-1) trailed 18-13 at halftime but led 20-18 entering the final quarter.

Adan Madera scored four touchdowns — three rushing — for Bonanza (2-2). Madera gained 171 yards on 29 attempts.

Alvarez scored on a 3-yard run with 2:45 left in the game to cut the Antlers' lead to 34-27. But St. Mary's (4-1) failed to recover an onside kick and Bonanza was able to run out the clock.

Andrew Smith added 83 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including a 76-yard burst in the second quarter, and Thomas Korsgaard had two of Rogue River's seven sacks to help the Chieftains get back to .500 (2-2) following an 0-2 start.

Also for Rogue River, Deandre Harris had 14 tackles and Smith 12.
