  • PHOENIX — Hidden Valley used strong line play and three touchdown passes from Tyler Gulbransen to defeat Phoenix 27-0 in the Skyline Conference opener for both teams Friday at Jack Woodward Stadium.
    Gulbransen, a senior quarterback, was 16 of 24 passing for 226 yards. He added 24 yards rushing on six carries.
    "(Gulbransen) is a great athlete," said Phoenix coach Toby Walker. "He's the heart and soul of their offense. He throws a good ball and makes good decisions."
    Joe Wardle was the Mustangs' top receiver with five catches for 55 yards and one touchdown. Travis Cafferty hauled in four receptions for 63 yards and one TD.
    AJ Potts paced Hidden Valley's ground game with 77 yards on 17 attempts
    Hidden Valley (4-1, 1-0 Skyline) amassed 345 yards in offense to 113 for Phoenix.
    The Pirates (2-2, 0-1) were limited to five first downs and 80 yards rushing.
    "They're a physical football team and they shut us down," said Walker. "We gave up some big passing plays at the most inopportune times."
    Junior quarterback Andrew Reynoso was the Pirates leading ground gainer with 51 yards on 13 carries. Reynoso was 3 of 8 passing for 33 yards.

    NORTH VALLEY 56, MAZAMA 22 — At Merlin, quarterback Tristan Burke threw a career-high six touchdowns as North Valley romped past Mazama.
    Burke was 15-for-20 for 345 yards and connected with Kyle Rose for two touchdowns — the first a 77-yard score that tied the game 7-all in the opening quarter.
    Rose also hauled in a 40-yard TD in the second quarter when the Knights (4-1, 1-0 Skyline) took control with three touchdowns while the defense limited the Vikings to just 10 passing yards and minus-2 yards rushing.
    Rose finished with three catches for 131 yards. Austin Neil rumbled for 113 yards on 16 carries and added a 77-yard touchdown reception on his way to 90 yards receiving. Burke also contributed on the ground with 68 yards, while Curtis Roberts had four receptions for 64 yards.
