Humane Society unveils calendar

Southern Oregon Humane Society is raising money with a new glossy, full-color calendar featuring "Women of a Certain Age," a news release announced.

The calendar creators have been meeting since July 2011 after they watched "Calendar Girls," starring Helen Mirren, says organizer Carole Allen, of Phoenix.

The calendar features tasteful photos of semi-retired women in colorful outfits posing with a pet. It includes special events in the Rogue Valley, such as the World of Wine, Jackson County Fair, Providence Festival of Trees, the Southern Oregon Jazz Festival.

The women sold month sponsorships and spaces for business cards to pay expenses.

The photos were taken by Judith Pavlik, a portrait and event photographer from Ashland. Graphic designer is Amanda Denbeck, a junior at Southern Oregon University majoring in art with a studio emphasis in digital arts.

SOHS adopted the project, giving it nonprofit status.

Calendars can be purchased by calling 541-227-9373, at SOHS's website,, or at Medford Animal Hospital, Tamara Abbett Dentistry, Best Friends Animal Hospital of East Medford, Stephen Phillips Dentistry, VCA Jackson Animal Hospital, Bear Creek Animal Clinic, Airport Chevrolet and Southern Oregon Subaru and other businesses listed in the calendar.
