Deputies searching for a gang member who fled from crash

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department is looking for a man deputies said is a documented Norteño gang member who fled after a high-speed chase ended in a crash on Blackwell Road Monday afternoon.

A deputy spotted a speeding white, 2001 Volkswagen Jetta near the intersection of Kirtland and Tolo roads at about 2:30 p.m. Monday, a news release reported Tuesday. As the deputy followed the speeding car on Kirtland Road, the Jetta began crossing the double yellow line and driving into oncoming traffic, the Sheriff's Department reported.

The deputy tried to stop the car, but it sped away on Blackwell Road toward Gold Hill. In the 12000 block of Blackwell Road, the deputy saw the Jetta leave the road and crash into a ditch. The driver, later identified as 21-year-old Toby Alexander Martinez, of Medford, got out of the car and ran through a field, the release said.

Additional deputies, a dog and a helicopter searched for Martinez, but ultimately couldn't find him, the release said.

Authorities said Martinez is known to be a Norteño gang member and is considered dangerous. There is a felony warrant out for his arrest on charges of attempting to elude police and reckless driving on May 6, court records show.

He was involved in another high-speed pursuit at 2 a.m. Sept. 3 in Central Point, the Sheriff's Department reported.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Department tip line at 541-774-8333 or Crime Stoppers of Southern Oregon at 1-800-850-0580. Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to an arrest in this case or any unsolved criminal activity. Callers can remain anonymous.
