Cascade Christian struck first, but the response by St. Mary's was quick and emphatic as the Crusaders pulled out a 3-1 victory in a District 4 girls soccer showdown Tuesday at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

After Cascade's Cheyanne Auchard scored from 24 yards out only six minutes into the contest, St. Mary's came back with an 11th-minute goal by Erika Peterson and a 29th-minute strike by Emily Elmore.

St. Mary's (6-2-3, 4-0 Dist. 4) added an insurance goal by Emily Elmore in the 60th, handing the Challengers (6-2-1, 1-1) their first setback since Sept. 17.

"This was a good stiff test for us," St. Mary's coach Dave Potter said. "We know that with Cascade Christian, one of their biggest goals was to beat us and they came out fast and aggressive and we had to respond. We were down one and the girls came on strong."

Peterson capitalized with a header off a nice flick pass from Lilli Knudsen, who sent in a throw-in by Rachel Raniele.

Eighteen minutes later, Amber Moore sent a perfect cross to Elmore, who one-touched the ball into the net from about 10 yards away to put the Crusaders ahead for good.

Elmore struck again in the 60th, finishing a nice throw-in by Raniele from about 6 yards out to give St. Mary's breathing room.

"Rachel Raniele obviously played well in the middle, as did Marybeth Barnum," Potter said. "They were pretty dynamic in their play today. "…I was real proud of how the girls responded to a stiff challenge today and they got the job done."
