We've been reading a lot about Medford getting a casino. Does this mean Roxy Ann Lanes is closing? How much more time do we have to get a few spares in?
— A local bowler
Some of us here at Since You Asked Gutterball Central have been known to knock down a pin or two, so we can understand your concern, Mr. or Ms. local bowler. Any competitive activity — can we call it a sport? — that involves beer and onion rings is OK in our book.
To find out whether bowling enthusiasts on the south side are going to have to lug their ball and shoes elsewhere, we checked with John Larkin, who owns Roxy Ann Lanes with his wife, Lela. The alley opened in 1959, and the Larkins have owned it since 2004.
When asked whether the bowling alley is closing, Larkin's answer was emphatic.
"Absolutely not," he said.
Larkin explained that when they sold the property in August to the Coquille Indian Tribe, they negotiated a lease of the property the bowling alley sits on, not the business itself.
"We never sold them the business of Roxy Ann Lanes," Larkin said. "We like the bowling business."
Larkin noted that because of the controversy surrounding casinos, he believes the alley won't be going away anytime soon.
"We think this is going to take a long time to resolve," Larkin said. "And we're going to be here."
In the meantime, Larkin says Roxy Ann Lanes continues to book bowling tournaments, and they recently resurfaced the parking lot and updated some equipment. In short, it's business as usual.
"We're just moving forward," Larkin said. "We've been here since 1959, and we're going to continue to be here in the future."
The alley is open Sundays from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Tuesdays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m. to midnight. Call 541-772-7171.
