An open house and public hearing about a project to build an expressway bypassing a section of Highway 62 is set for Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Jackson County Parks auditorium, 7520 Table Rock Road, White City.
The open house begins at 5 p.m. and the public hearing begins at 6:30 p.m.
The proposed project would create a four-mile, four-lane route that would pull up to 50 percent of the traffic off Highway 62 to a new route roughly following the old Medco Haul Road from Sportsman's Warehouse, over Vilas Road to Corey Road, just south of White City. Eventually, the expressway would stretch nearly 8 miles from Interstate 5 to just past the Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics in White City.
Oregon Department of Transportation project leader Dick Leever said the open house will focus on the project's goals of enhancing safety and alleviating congestion.
A draft environmental impact statement looking at the potential effects of the entire 7.9 mile proposed expressway also is up for review at the event. A 45-day comment period continues through Oct. 29.
