EAGLE POINT — With its starting libero out due to a concussion, North Medford inserted junior outside hitter Katy Carter at the position.
Carter responded with 31 digs and three aces as the Black Tornado (9-7) pulled out a wild nonconference victory over Eagle Point, 17-25, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20, 15-12.
"I was really impressed (with Eagle Point) from the last time we played them until now," said North Medford head coach Erika Wright. "They were significantly better."
Down two sets to zero, Wright was undaunted.
"I never have the girls focus on the big picture," she said. "If you can make the game go your way and play point-for-point, then you can make things happen."
Senior outside hitter Emily Carlson led North Medford with 17 kills and 13 digs, and senior setter Telsche Munson contributed 44 assists and 13 digs.
"We just couldn't get to the last set," said Eagles coach Elizabeth Bilden, whose team dropped to 5-11. "We had them the first two."
Hannah Morris recorded 23 assists for the Eagles, and Taylor Bidwell led the team with nine kills. Kelly Brawner notched 21 digs, and Brianna Shopp and Kaya Hoag each had six kills.
ASHLAND 3, CRATER 2 — At Ashland, Shelby Minor had six of her 17 kills in the fifth set during a monster match for the senior outside hitter as Ashland edged Crater, 21-25, 25-21, 25-15, 24-26, 15-6, in nonleague play.
Minor, who didn't commit a hitting error, also registered 18 digs and two aces.
In the fifth set, Maddie Douglas served six points for the Grizzlies (8-5). She also had eight digs, two aces and three kills.
Ashland middle hitter Madeline Wallace posted 13 kills and three blocks, and Hope Baldrica added six kills and three blocks.
ROSEBURG 3, GRANTS PASS 0 — At Roseburg, Anna Bruns had nine kills and Stefenie Griggs eight as Roseburg won the SOH contest, 25-10, 25-13, 25-7.
Kiana Cash had an outstanding serving match, racking up nine aces for the Indians (21-3, 7-0 SOH). Grants Pass fell to 5-10 and 2-5.
PHOENIX 3, KLAMATH UNION 0 — At Klamath Falls, Phoenix was 63 of 69 serving in a 25-17, 27-25, 25-10 Skyline victory.
Freshman Karlie Richardson had seven of the Pirates' 14 aces and went 14-for-16 from the line. She also had nine aces.
Freshman outside hitter Haleigh Wagman went 21-for-21 with four aces and nine kills for the Pirates (13-4, 6-1 Sky), who received 13 digs from sophomore libero Bailee Tally.
NORTH VALLEY 3 MAZAMA 0 — At Merlin, senior libero Kenzie Schmoll recorded 27 digs in their 25-22, 25-13, 25-20 Skyline Conference victory over Mazama.
Junior middle blocker Karley hook garnered 19 kills while senior setter Lacey LaCosse contributed 28 assists for the Knights (4-10, 2-4 SC).
HENLEY 3 HIDDEN VALLEY 2 — At Klamath Falls, Henley handed Hidden Valley its first Skyline loss in three years, 15-25, 24-26, 25-22, 25-17, 15-6.
Hidden Valley outside hitter Megan Combe had a big match with seven kills, three aces and 14 digs.
Setter McKenzie Cushman contributed 23 assists and eight kills for the Mustangs (8-5, 6-1 Sky).
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Rogue River, Karlee Britton amassed 17 kills, including 10 in the first set, as Cascade Christian remained unbeaten in the SCH.
The Challengers (14-5, 5-0 SCH) also got five kills from Trudy Burns and 23 assists from Kayla Winters against the Chieftains (1-11, 1-5).
LAKEVIEW 3, ST. MARY'S 1 — At Lakeview, Lakeview pulled into a tie for second place with St. Mary's in the SCH with a 25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-11 victory.
St. Mary's is 8-8 overall, while Lakeview is 10-4.
CHILOQUIN 3, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 — At Cave Junction, Chiloquin took advantage of Illinois Valley serving and hitting errors for a 25-13, 25-23, 25-20 win.
Cougars junior setter Abby Miller had one of her best performances, racking up 45 assists to go with three kills and a pair of aces. The Cougars fell to 0-12.
