COTTAGE GROVE — Stingy defense made the Cascade Christian football team's impromptu test against highly-touted Rainier an easy one at Cottage Grove High School on Friday.
The Challengers yielded just 142 total yards and leaned on Brandon Williams for early offense to pick up a 35-0 nonconference victory.
The win was technically Cascade Christian's second of the week due to a forfeit by Creswell, which had been slated to host the Challengers on Friday. The Challengers (7-0), who were informed of the forfeit on Monday, seemed unfazed by the lack of preparation time for Rainier.
"Any time we get a shot at a team at this level, it gives us a better shot in the next battle ahead," said Cascade Christian coach Jon Gettman. "I want us, and the kids want us, to be challenged.
"I was definitely pleased with how we played and I liked how our guys responded up front. We had a good approach coming into it and we kinda took them out of their game plan."
The defensive line, led by defensive end David Sellers, wreaked havoc by getting penetration and bottling up the run. Sellers recorded five tackles — one for loss — with two sacks and a forced fumble.
Outside linebacker Dante Olson added nine tackles and Aaron Cesaro had four tackles, two of which were for negative yardage.
With about 10 minutes left in the contest, Cody Parker scooped up a fumble and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown.
The Challengers got their first three touchdowns from Williams. He punched the first in from 2 yards out in the first quarter and hauled in a 39-yard TD pass from Daniel Scottow in the second period.
Williams made his final trip to the end zone by ripping off a 51-yard touchdown run, and Seth Knox snagged his first varsity TD from Scottow to cap the third quarter.
Williams had 10 carries for 94 yards and two catches for 49 yards.
