    Spartans fall short in Utah

  • OGDEN, Utah — Zach O'Mara broke a 4-all tie for the Ogden Mustangs with about 10 minutes left and kept the Southern Oregon Spartans at bay for the remainder of the match in Western States Hockey League action Saturday night.

  • OGDEN, Utah — Zach O'Mara broke a 4-all tie for the Ogden Mustangs with about 10 minutes left and kept the Southern Oregon Spartans at bay for the remainder of the match in Western States Hockey League action Saturday night.
    Ogden tacked on an empty net goal by Sean Haltam with 33 seconds remaining to secure a 6-4 victory.
    The Spartans (3-3) got a goal from Tim Talty in the first period off assists by Joe Bordak and Avik Bordak to enter the second period tied at 1-all with Ogden. The Mustangs tacked on three goals in the second but Southern Oregon used goals by Taylor McConnell and Joe Bordak to narrow the gap entering the final period.
    Talty's power play goal about five minutes into the third period tied the game at 4-all, with assists going to Avik Bordak and Sean Buckley, but the Spartans couldn't hold off Ogden (4-4) and O'Mara, who scored unassisted for the go-ahead goal.
    Luke Morin, Robert Donovan, Talty and Avik Bordak were also involved in the second-period goals.
    The teams take to the ice again today to wrap up the three-game series.

    Ogden 1 3 2 — 6
