PORTLAND — Eric Avila set a new course record and led the top-ranked Southern Oregon men's cross country team to a first-place finish, while the 21st-ranked women finished sixth at the 2012 Cascade Collegiate Conference Preview Saturday at Lents Park.
The men's team showed off its depth with 10 runners finishing among the race's top-22. Avila finished the 8-kilometer course in a record time of 24 minutes, 32.51 seconds to earn the individual title by almost five seconds over unattached runner Alex Dillard. Scott McIntyre placed fifth with a time of 25:02.55, followed by Tyler VanDyke in eighth (25:6.87, Jared Hixon in 12th (25:22.36), Nathan Normo in 14th (25:27.48), Brett Hornig in 15th (25:30.93) and Eric Ghelfi in 16th (25:35.53).
Southern Oregon totaled 34 points to clinch the team championship, with NCAA Division I Portland coming in second (72) and CCC opponent Northwest Christian placing third (97).
On the women's side, the Raiders picked up 134 points to place sixth out of 10 total teams, behind top-finisher Portland (56 points), No. 7 Northwest Christian (63), Portland State (80), Northwest (110) and UO Running Club (132).
Alexandra Rudd led the SOU women's team with a 10th-place finish, crossing the finish line of the 5k course in 18:45.34. Anne Hagy placed 19th with a time of 19:03.3 and Jessie Roazario finished 20th in 19:04.92.
