SILVER LAKE — Senior setter Heather Lass exploded for 15 kills, 28 digs, 29 assists and 10 aces as Prospect fought back from a two-games deficit to pull out a 22-25, 22-25, 25-18, 25-17, 15-12 Mountain Valley League volleyball win over North Lake on Saturday.
"It was close the whole way," Prospect coach Shelli Lass said.
Taylor Bernhardt added 15 kills and 27 digs and Taylor Reynolds had six kills and five blocks for the Cougars (16-3, 12-1 MVL). Also for Prospect, Miranda Hedgpeth had 23 digs.
Prospect went the distance for the first time this season to increase its winning streak to eight matches.
North Lake dropped its fifth in a row to fall to 2-10 in league play.
CLEARWATER CLASSIC — At Bend, after going winless in pool play, South Medford regrouped and made it to the finals in the bronze bracket at the 24-school tournament.
The Panthers lost to Mountain View, 24-26, 25-21, 15-9 in the title match.
South opened bracket play with a 25-18, 23-25, 15-8 victory over Thurston. Then the Panthers defeated Ashland, 20-25, 25-19, 15-11, in the semifinals.
South Medford was propelled by the senior leadership from middle Bree Polk, rightside hitter Bri Fidow and outside Brittney Cox.
Jesuit defeated Central Catholic in the gold bracket championship match.
GILCHRIST 3, BUTTE FALLS 1 — At Gilchrist, Butte Falls did a good job digging but dropped the road league match, 12-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-16.
Joli Hobbs, the Loggers' senior setter, contributed 19 assists, 12 aces, six digs and five blocks.
Senior middle Brittney Gorman and junior outside Brandi O'Keefe both had a team-high 14 digs.
Butte Falls also received 14 kills, seven digs and two blocks from senior outside Tamika Funk.
ADIDAS CROSS COUNTRY CLASSIC — At Portland, Phoenix sophomore Nevina De Luca ran a 5-kilometer lifetime best in the prestigious meet at Fern Hill Park that had 77 teams from five different states competing.
De Luca finished fourth in the girls invitational division with a time of 19:08.
Alisha Luna, the defending Class 4A state champion from Klamath Union, won the girls invitational race.
ROCK N RIVER INVITE — At Pleasant Hill, the Ashland girls captured the team title in the 15-school Bristow Rock n River Invitational at Elijah Bristow State Park.
Senior Madeline Chaves led the charge, taking third place out of 97 runners with a time of 20 minutes, 38 seconds in the 5,000-meter race. Megan Ganim was fourth (20:50), Kia Parrish-Haim fifth (20:58), Sara Dunagan eighth (21:20) and Quinn Blackwolf 10th (21:28).
Christine Impara secured 19th (22:01) and Emma Parker 22nd (22:04).
The Grizzlies finished with a meet-best 30 points, followed by Crescent Valley in second (86) and Central Catholic in third (124).
On the boys side, Lars Ferguson-Rockwell captured 23rd (18:25) and Kelly Honsinger 24th (18:26) for Ashland, which placed fifth out of 14 schools.
SOUTH UMPQUA INVITATIONAL — At Myrtle Creek, Illinois Valley junior Samantha Milner took first place in the seven-team South Umpqua Invitational with a time of 22 minutes, 28 seconds.
Edilet Rodriguez was second (23:57), Taylor Byrne third (24:50) and Taysha Hodge fifth (27:25) for the Cougars.
On the boys side, Brian Waterman finished 14th (22:01) for Illinois Valley.
ASHLAND BOYS, GIRLS SPLIT — At Ashland, the Ashland girls and boys water polo teams each beat Sheldon and lost to West Albany at the Southern Oregon University pool.
Sadie Kasiah had nine goals, five assists and four steals in the Grizzlies' 18-17 win over Sheldon. Emma Frantz recorded four goals and two assists, Sabrina Scoggin three goals, three assists and three steals and Lili Wurfl five blocks.
In Ashland's 15-2 loss to West Albany, Kasiah and Maddy Longshore both had two goals and Wurfl four blocks.
On the boys side, Hoku Eggersten registered four goals and two assists in the Grizzlies' 11-9 win over Sheldon. Jericho Walker-Roberts turned in two goals, two steals and one assist, Tristan Gavin two goals and one steal, Cole Harding two goals, one assist and one steal and Miles Furuichi 12 saves.
In Ashland's 9-6 loss to West Albany, Harding had three goals, Lewy Kurach two goals and Furuichi 11 blocks.
MEDFORD BOYS, GIRLS LOSE — At Ashland, West Albany defeated the Medford boys 17-8 and the Bulldogs handed the Medford girls a 10-1 loss at the SOU pool.
In boys, Reid Gibson scored seven goals for Medford and goalkeeper Walker Drew recorded three saves.
Alisha Gaffney scored Medford's lone goal and goalie Anne Walker stopped 14 shots.
