  • A Eugene hunter who went missing in the woods near Prospect's Bessie Creek area Saturday was found in good shape in a remote area 21 hours later.
Police say Marvin Core, 57, had been elk hunting with family members.
They had been tracking elk and coordinating their movements in the woods via cellphone.
Core's phone battery died at about noon, and he lost contact with his son. Family members spent hours looking for him before contacting authorities.
Jackson County sheriff's search and rescue crews looked for Core through the night, with help from Klamath County and Josephine County search and rescue teams and Jackson County air support.
Core was spotted from the air at 4 p.m. Sunday in a remote area. He told responders he had gotten lost while trying to find his way back to a trailhead. He said he had heard the helicopter in the area and started a bonfire to help them find him. Other than being tired and hungry, Core was in good shape.
Police said the event is a reminder of the importance of traveling in pairs while hiking, hunting or taking part in other recreational activities. Emergency preparedness kits should be taken along in case a person gets lost, including a fire starter, snacks, water and a signaling mirror.
