Southern Oregon has been home to many prominent wrestling duals over the years, mostly thanks to the history of programs like Crater, Eagle Point...
Junior outside hitter Katy Carter was on top of her game Thursday night in helping power North Medford to a Southern Oregon Hybrid volleyball win over Crater at North Medford High.
Carter posted an impressive .520 hitting percentage with only one hitting error in 25 swings and finished with 14 kills and five digs to lead North Medford to a 27-25, 25-12, 25-16, 25-10 victory.
"She was pretty good for us tonight and really played well," North Medford head coach Erika Wright said of Carter's breakout outing.
Freshman outside hitter Emily Carter added 10 kills and the Black Tornado (10-8, 5-2 SOH) received a solid effort from seniors Emily Carlson, Telsche Munson and Ashley Smith. Carlson, a right side hitter, had nine kills, the setter Munson notched 28 assists, 12 digs and four aces and libero Ashley Smith added 25 digs and four aces.
Munson and Smith were especially pivotal from the service line to help North rebound from an opening-set loss to the Comets (8-11, 2-6). Wright said Crater's Katie Britton was especially successful in getting her team off balance with her topspin jump serve, and the Comets were relentless in coming up with digs.
"They're scrappy," said Wright. "They were digging balls up that would've gone down three weeks ago when we last played them. We were hitting some balls pretty hard and they were digging them up."
