MERLIN — In its first boys soccer meeting with North Valley, Phoenix earned a comfortable victory.
Pirates coach Dennis Flenner didn't expect a repeat when Phoenix, unbeaten in the Skyline Conference, traveled to face the Knights Saturday.
He was right.
Jose Mendez scored a goal in each half — his first two-goal game — to lead the Pirates to a 2-0 victory.
"They put up a real fight," said Flenner, whose team defeated North Valley 8-2 early this month. "Everyone's fighting for playoff spots so you have to get wins where you can."
Phoenix (9-1-1, 8-0 Sky) took the lead when Mendez, a junior center-midfielder, banged home a shot from 5 yards out in the 27th minute.
"It's nice to spread the wealth," said Flenner, noting that Mendez stepped up with Johnny Esqueda and Eli Espana commanding much attention from defenses.
Mendez scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute after Espana was taken down in the box.
Phoenix had 11 shots to four by North Valley (5-6, 2-6).
Pirate goalie Hector Rocha and center backs Eddy Arevalo and Jesus DeLaCruz were responsible for the shutout.
KLAMATH UNION 3, HIDDEN VALLEY 2 — At Klamath Falls, Klamath Union edged Hidden Valley in Skyline Conference action.

David Hand had three goals for the Monarchs (7-2-1, 3-2 Dist. 2).
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 1, GLIDE 0 — Travis Cave punched in the game's lone goal in the 48th minute to lead Cascade Christian to a District 2 win at U.S. Cellular Community Park.
On the goal, Cave intercepted a pass, split a pair of defenders and deposited the ball into the low corner of the net.
The Challengers (3-7, 2-4 Dist. 2) had 14 shots on goal overall, including five that hit the post and bounced out in the first half.
ILLINOIS VALLEY 2, CRESWELL 1 — At Creswell, Boaz Dillon and Keith Lewin scored goals for Illinois Valley in District 2 play.
Dillon booted in a shot from about 21 yards out in the 45th minute and Lewin cashed in on a penalty kick around the 60th minute.
Myles Toman scored in a scramble close to the box with about 10 minutes left before the Cougars (5-6-1, 3-3 Dist. 2) went into a 5-4-1 formation to protect their advantage.
Creswell dropped to 3-7 overall and 2-4 in league play.
EAGLE POINT 9, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Eagle Point, the Eagles used a strong offensive attack to down Rogue River in nonleague play.
Jose Lopez had two goals and two assists and Joaquin Rubio and Adam Huntsman each netted a pair of goals — both of Huntsman's were headers — for Eagle Point (2-5-2).
Nick Wolf recorded a goal and two assists and Sergio Bencomo and Brock Wilson each scored a goal for the Eagles, who led 3-0 at halftime.
Goalkeeper Christoval Escobedo earned the shutout against Rogue River (6-6).
