  • The Southern Oregon University men's basketball team is ranked 23rd in the NAIA Division II preseason Top 25 coaches poll.
It's the first time the Raiders have been ranked since Feb. 22, 2006 — the final poll that season. They were 13th.
SOU will be led this season by Eric Thompson, who received honorable mention in All-American voting. Preseason all-conference honoree David Sturner highlights a group of nine newcomers.
The Raiders garnered 101 points. Fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference programs Oregon Tech (second), Eastern Oregon (ninth) and Warner Pacific (15th) are also ranked.
No other conference has four ranked teams.
SOU opens the season at Pacific Union on Nov. 2 and will play its first home game on Nov. 20 against Oregon Tech.
Southern Oregon will partner with KOBI to raise money for YES (Youth. Education. Success.) this Saturday at home athletic events.
SOU will donate a dollar per admission ticket from the football game and volleyball match. SOU hosts Carroll College in football at 1 p.m. at Raider Stadium in a battle of nationally ranked teams, and the volleyball squad hosts Northwest University at 7 p.m. at Bob Riehm Arena. Donation boxes will be set up at the events.
YES raises money for school districts in Southern Oregon and Northern California to help with classroom supplies, extracurricular activities and school programs. For more information, visit www.yestokids.net
