  • KLAMATH FALLS — The Phoenix girls cross country team captured second place at the Skyline Conference Championships to seal up a state berth at Henley's Joe Arant Running Trail on Wednesday.
    Nevina De Luca took fourth place with a time of 19 minutes, 49.85 seconds to pace the Pirates, who will next compete in the Class 4A state race at Lane Community College in Eugene on Nov. 3.
    The top-ranked Klamath Union girls earned first place with 19 points, the ninth-ranked Pirates collected 42 and Henley was third with 72.
    On the boys side, second-ranked North Valley (29) and fourth-ranked Hidden Valley (35) secured state berths. Phoenix, ranked seventh, was third (78).
    The Pirate girls have qualified for state every year since 2009.
    Lindsey Vermillion placed eighth (21:06.04), Ashlee Vos 10th (21:20.27), Arin Fitch 14th (22:45.71), Katie Vermillion 15th (22:55.20), Victoria Davidson 16th (23:16.92) and Emma DeFruscia 26th (24:58.58).
    Hidden Valley's Sierra Brown took first in 19:03.68.
    On the boys side, North Valley's Jonathan Cornish captured first (16:11.05), teammate David Cornish (16:12) second and Hidden Valley's Shane Crofoot third (16:30.79).
    Matt Katibah paced Phoenix with his 10th-place finish (17:36).
