    One almost has to stop so one doesn't damage the wheels on one's car. We all pay taxes, but the streets do not seem to get repaired.

    Good news, Lucille. The source of your bumpy rides has quickly moved its way up the priority list, and in fact appears to have just jumped to the top of the list.
    Central Point Parks and Public Works Director Matt Samitore said the "Hopkins dip" was created by a contractor when a utility crossing was constructed on Hopkins for apartment buildings across from Dave's Market.
    While the dip is unlikely to cause damage to one's car, Samitore said the city takes pride in maintaining "a healthy transportation system" and plans to repair the damage itself after repeated efforts to get the contractor to do so failed.
    It first appeared the work would begin in two to three weeks. But after a Public Works employee examined the site, the work has been moved up to start ... today! How's that for results, Lucille?
    Samitore says that between projects, grant matches and regular maintenance, the city spends some $400,000 a year on streets. Recent projects have included repairs and upgrades on downtown Pine Street, Beall Lane, North 10th Street and portions of Scenic and Highway 99.
    In the coming year, funding is in place to repair Freeman Road and portions of Highway 99 south of the Fire District No. 3 station.
