The logger struck by a 2-foot section of rolling log while at work in the Applegate Valley's Hinkle Gulch last month has been upgraded to good condition, Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center officials said.
Rob McKenzie, 50, has been recovering since the Sept. 27 incident in which a section of log rolled over him while he was working at the bottom of a steep ravine.
McKenzie was part of a crew on the Pilot Joe reforestation project, contracted to cut down trees before crew members of HM Inc. hauled them out of the area. McKenzie suffered severe back and hip injuries.
A meticulous rescue took place to haul McKenzie out of the 500-foot ravine. Firefighters from Applegate Fire District No. 9, the Oregon Department of Forestry and Jackson County Fire District No. 5 joined other loggers in hauling McKenzie up the steep hill on a backboard attached to a rope.
