KLAMATH FALLS — Jose Mendez has become a scoring force for the top-ranked Phoenix boys soccer team.
The junior midfielder scored two goals as the league champion Pirates defeated Henley 3-0 to complete an undefeated Skyline Conference season Friday.
Phoenix (11-1-1, 10-0 Sky) is ranked No. 1 in the OSAA power ratings, while Henley (11-3, 7-3) is No. 3.
It's the third straight contest Mendez has scored two goals.
"His game has really flourished," said Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner. "He's shooting and finishing well."
In the 15th minute, Mendez scored the only goal of the first half on a shot from 12 yards out off an assist from Johnny Esqueda.
Phoenix received an insurance goal in the 62nd minute on a header by Lupe Flores off a crossing pass from Eli Espana.
Then Mendez struck again in the 73rd minute with a header off another Esqueda assist.
"They came out pretty fast and were beating us to the ball in the first 10 minutes of the second half," said Flenner. "We were playing chase but we turned the game around and moved it our way."
The Pirates got excellent performances on their back line from team captain Jesus DeLaCruz, Eddie Arevalo, George Pinon and Said Castillo. Junior goalie Hector Rocha was tested in the second half and had three difficult saves.
"Our defense got a shutout against one of the best teams in the state at their house," said Flenner. "And we had some good finishing down by their goal."
CANYONVILLE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 1, ST. MARY'S 0 — At Canyonville, St. Mary's controlled the tempo but Canyonville Christian capitalized on a rebound off the chest of Crusader goalkeeper Derek Reynolds 12 minutes into the second half of the District 2 contest.
The victory clinched the district championship for the Pilots (8-1, 7-1 Dist. 2).
Michael Gambee and Renzo Marchini spearheaded a strong defensive performance by the Crusaders (5-8, 4-3).
